If you have happened upon this page, it is likely because you are interested in writing fantasy, creative writing or are already a fantasy writer. This web page is meant to be an invitation to any and all writers to join and contribute the Open Source Creativity (OSC) project: The Legends of Mernac.
For fantasy writers and creative writing enthusiasts we have numerous opportunities for your fantasy writing. Some of these are a creative outlet, recognition and publicity, and eventually opportunities for earning income from you fantasy writing. If you are a writer or an author and you are new to Mernac, the first thing you are probably wondering is: What is The Legends of Mernac site? There are many answers available through the site, however the best place to review is probably the What is Mernac? FAQ. In a nutshell, the Legend of Mernac is the 10,000 year written and illustrated history of the mythical world of Mernac. It is written by numerous fantasy writers that contribute their fantasy writing in a semi structured environment using common lore, references, and by building upon the writings of other writers (or you own work). This creates a never ending story or tales. With multiple writers and authors it can also be considered the ultimate in interactive fiction. Writers and author will be given the opportunity and tools to promote their work both on and off the site, making it an very attractive "home" for those writers that would ultimately like to become a professional or semi-professional fantasy writer.
These contributed stories are then illustrated by numerous artists who freely contribute their art to your stories. You, of course, have control of which art you accept or not accept for the stories you write. The artists have been asked to submit art to stories, or passages of creative fantasy writing that inspires them, so the art that is submitted to your work will likely have a direct correlation to the style and "feel" of the fantasy writing that you have created.
In addition to art being inspire by prose, Mernac has a system where fantasy writing can be inspired by fantasy art. If you are ever looking for something to inspire your writing, you should take a look at our "Spirit Art" Forum. This is where artists will display their art that they are looking to add to a story. You and other fantasy writers often quickly come up with an idea for a story by viewing these marvelous images. It is a wonderful tool to get rid of writers block.
Another tool to get your creative juices flowing is our Adopt a Sapling program. This is where you will complete a "teaser" or what we call a "sapling" ? a short paragraph or two that is meant to inspire fantasy writers into completing a tale that is yet to be told. This is also the best way to get started writing for Mernac, as to begin the process of becoming a Scribe (writer) prospective writers are asked to complete a few saplings which they in turn will use to launch their own fantasy stories, tales and saga's. Writers may also choose to participate in our regular interactive writing activities where many authors contribute stories all about the same event told from different perspectives of different characters.
Besides writing, we have many fun activities on the Legends of Mernac site. Most are designed to inspire fantasy writing. We have such things as Ask Grumby, a forum based way of asking the founders and "Gods" of the site questions relating to global plot line. We also have the Dragon's Tale our ongoing trivia challenge (with awards!) of the different lore that has been established in Mernac.
Like a little role playing in you fantasy writing? Well you will have the opportunity to assume the role of a character that you will write about for Mernac. In this system you can enjoy the reputation, recognition, and fun or becoming one of our mythical Sages, Disciples, Or even one of the 20 Gods (The Mothers and The Fathers) that rule Mernac both in a literary and real world perspective.
And, of course, there are continual contests for cash and prizes, our first contest (Prose inspired by Art) was for $1,000 cash, many others are also available in our contest forum.
