Interactive Fiction|Never Ending Story

A Call For Writers

Legends of Mernac, a site dedicated to interactive fiction, writing and story telling will be hosting the first of many "Write-ins" this 4-day Thanksgiving weekend (11/23/06 ? 11/26/06).  This will involve many writers all writing about the same event from a different character's perspective.  The end-result will be weaved together into a "book" in the never ending story of the mythical world of Mernac.

We already have a rich world constructed in this world building site of fantasy writing and fantasy art, so you will have tremendous source material to draw on.  The idea is to get as many scribes (Writers) together to participate in a "write in" over the 4 day Thanksgiving weekend and have all of them write a legend (short story) about the same event in Traddlebow's history from different characters perspective.

Each legend submitted would start out

"On the day before the Battle for Traddlebow XYZ (XYZ = your character?s name) was..."

The legend (short story of chapter) that follows would be the scribe's (authors) narrative of events that happen to his/her character the day before and the day of the Battle for Traddlebow.  This BTW will occur 3 days after Arumbus and party reach Traddlebow (See Proving Airianna and The Path to Traddlebow)

What you would receive the Wednesday before Thanksgiving would be a write up from The founder of the Legends of Mernac site (Rick) setting the scene of what globally happens ? the bas plotline.  All participating scribes (Writers) must not change this global narrative (which will only be used as research notes) but may embellish and add to it in any means that furthers the global story, AND ties into any legends you already have going or plan on developing.

Once the scribe has the guidelines on Wednesday, they will have 4 days to write a rough draft and return it to Rick by Sunday Midnight.  Rick (and I dare say the other Gods) will then lightly edit (if needed) all the participating stories so that consistency can be maintained.  Then the revisions will be sent to each scribe to make their final edits.  These will all be returned to Rick and all will be posted and interlinked by Rick and the Gods (with appropriate Scribe names of the authors), before Christmas.

If we get enough scribes participating we could easily have a body of work the size of a typical fantasy novel.

Qualifications:

Be a member of the site (Free) and you must have a character story written and published before Nov 17th.  The character must be alive during the Sap War period (mid 2600?s).  The character can live anywhere in Mernac.  Rick will figure out a way to tie them in the guidelines.  We would prefer a character the scribe comes up with?. But Rick has several in mind if someone want a prefab idea that ties in.

Plotline leading up to the event

Here is a very brief overview of the circumstances leading up to The Battle for Traddlebow - a much more comprehensive one will be supplied the Wednesday before Thanks giving.

The Battle for Traddlebow in Gilmore, and the Gentle Ones massacre in the Hocklock Mountains that preceded it 2 days earlier can be likened to "the shot heard around the world" or Archduke Ferdinand's assassination in the Real world.

It was the impetus that throws Mernac into the Sap wars in the mid 2600's.  Both these events were instigated and manipulated By Barak's son, the dark wizard Kragle Iros, King of Kezia and the events were set in motion in the story Kragles Carvings series; The Blade of Volition and "Shyla's Dark"

In these stories Kragle is carving a "fur" out of the sacred Stromba wood, once the carving is completed (and hair or fur from the intended victim is used to adorn the wooden figurine) Kragle gains control of the individual the carving is of.  In this case it is of the traveling Grayfur that is visiting the village of the Gentle ones on the continent of Ooloo at the time that Mootill is undergoing the leadership ritual on the eve of the Chadralee when siberlee gathers "five of seven" of the Champions of Mernac

The Grayfur "Eetoo" who was a minor Hundar (shapeshifter) practitioner has his powers of shapeshifting greatly improved when Kragle inhabits his body.  Eetoo, recruits and leads a band of Patchfurs to attack the Mootill's village of the Gentle ones.  The leaders of the patchfurs he shapeshifts into elves and humans, thus giving the appearance that the attack is being lead by various "races of the light" he instructs the patchfurs to kill five of each seven found in the village - decimating most of the village but leaving enough furs alive to spread the word of the patchfur attack led by elves and human "hungry to gain control of the Manta Sap" in the forests of the Hoolock mountains. - the word of the attack spreads and creates animosity of all the furs toward the races of the light.

After the attack, Eetoo magically teleports to the Kitchor forest just south of Traddlebow where the are 100 septeens of War ogre hidden and a company of cut -throat mercenaries lead by
Driskil Forlorn the renegade Linge and led by Stob the War Ogre Clan Overseer. .  The War Ogre’s needed little to have then want to battle the Wood elves, but was any hesitation it was vanquished by the spirit form of Galigan, Desciple of BU, The Father of Destruction.  Galigan, though unable to physically touch any in the physical world was uniquely able to feed and concentrate the rage in the War Ogres Hearts for atrocities the Wood Elves of Gilmore may or may not have done over the seasons.  Galigan under Bu’s direction drove the War Ogres into a killing frenzy that nothing but the letting of blood would satisfy.

Eetoo, still under the control of Kragle once again uses his shape shifting abilities and changed the leader of each of the War Ogre Septeens into a Fur.  The one hundred Septeens then proceed to attack Traddlebow and Traddlebow castle. But note before Kragle and Barak set there trap even tighter.  Kragle had hired a half elf Assassin, Kataryna "Black Rose" Vaelryn to ensure the Captain of Traddlesbows Gurad was “eliminated”, thus tremendously damaging Traddlebow’s ability toi defend herself.

Barak, knowing the Siberlee, the Goddess of Nature had already chosen some of the “champions of Mernac” and they were on there way to Traddlebow was not about to leave anything to chance so he also Had his favorite succubus, Traesha, completely distract King Brannen, the elf King of Gilmore – much to the displeasure of Moroova Saylein The Kings witch Mistress.

This occurs right after Arumbus, Hogdin, Salina, Vanessa and Airianna have reached Traddlebow.  Arumbus and Hogdin are in the dungeon awaiting a trial for being highway men.  Salina is devastated by the useless king that she is about to wed (and his witch mistress!) Vanessa is lobbying the Gilmore court to get Arumbus and Hogdin out, and Airianna seeks out the 666 guild to clandestinely "spring" Hogdin and Arumbus from jail and runs into Sallion Morningnight (who BTW has a thing for Hogdin) in the Traddlebow Arms

All is occurring as the War Ogres stints spring a surprise attack, apparently being lead by "Furs".  There will be many other characters introduced as per Scribes make their interest know in participating in the Thanksgiving write-in.   As ill prepared as Traddlebowe was – the castle wall were strong – all-be-it impenetrable.  For this Kragle had two plans for the siege that ensued.  Firstly, Barak had released a Water Dragon from imprisioned in the Rainbow Reef.  This creatur would swim up the Mirt River to Traddlebow castle and “Breath of Ice” would be enough to Break even the stongest Gates.

Little did Kragle know the a Gemstone Merfolk priestess by the name of Alutia Amethyst was following the Water Dragon trying to imprison him again before the damage could be done.

Kragle had also enlisted the Help of BU the Father of Destruction to use his servent, Garver Dorzman and his Gargoyles to Attack Traddlebow Castle from the air as they waited for The Water Dragon to Arrive.  Of course Seargent Jarvis, Vanessa Freeheart’s Bodyguard and Estenfall  have something to say about that.

How does it all end?  We don’t’ know yet… the tale is still to be written.  The writing will Start Thanksgiving day and go on for four days.  We currently have 17 writers who will all be writing an inter-related story of The Battle for Traddlebow… come join us and write a little.

Or wait to see how the tale comes out!
