ASK KALOS

Dear Kalos,
I realize that being omnipotent I probably know more about this than you however, I have not been able to answer this question:"What is TRUE LOVE?".  I truly love battling, destruction, pain and suffering. I really love good strategy and planning. I love the new and inventive weapons Mernacians create to battle one another and I really love the smell of blood mixed in the morning mist over a large battlefield. But alas, all these things are fleeting and don't sooth my lust over the long term!  - Signed, Undetermined

Dear Undetermined,
You may be confusing love with lust. You may greatly enjoy so much destruction; it really gets your adrenaline pumping through your racing heart. It can be very satisfying and addicting. But, when it comes to “love,” and especially “true love,” you get many of the same reactions except for one. With “true love” there is a calming to your soul, a feeling of being complete. Continue your search for love, Oh – Omnipotence, but you most likely will not find it on a battlefield. You will know that you found “True Love” when you are truly ready to sacrifice everything you are for this special “Love.” - Kalos

MERNACIAN INTERVIEW

Sometimes, I think I lead the most adventurous life of anyone in all of Mernac. That’s not me bragging, that’s simple fact. How many others can say they’ve interviewed royalty of nearly every race, Light or Dark, though I must admit there are some gaps in the Races of the Dark interviews. Anyone who tracks down an Undead willing to be interviewed and who promises not to suck my soul down into the underworld, I’d love to hear about it and would pay a handsome referral fee. Anyway, my latest and perhaps most unique interview to-date is with one magnificent Merfolkian queen; I mean Ka~Tel: Alutia Amethyst.

First off, I’m truly sorry to hear about your mother’s recent passing. I’d heard such wonderful things about her and looked forward to interviewing her. You have my eternal gratitude for doing the interview in her stead. Secondly, you have such a lovely name. Is there some history behind your name? Does it have special meaning for your people?

Well, my given name of Alutia, was chosen in honor of my beloved mother.  Upon my birth all our nation rejoiced and celebrated for seven straight days and seven straight evenings.  All who laid eyes upon me as infant, proclaimed my beauty to be equaled only by my mother’s, and thusly, I was named Alutia, or Little Zalutia.  My family name of Amethyst, is an age-old name handed down generation upon generation.  We are a royal bloodline, rumored to have been personally named and blessed by Kala herself.

I’ve noticed that lovely design you have around your eyes; are those real amethysts? Wherever did you find such lovely specimens? Did you come up with the design yourself and if so how? Do you ever change the design? I’m sorry, I’ll wait for your answer now, it’s just everything about you and your people, fascinates me. I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting a Gemstone Merfolk before.

Why thank you so much, your much too kind.  And, yes, they are real amethysts.  My Kazon changes the design for me, to suite my preferences and mood each day.  These particular gems were given to my mother many, many seasons ago during a Jewel Bequest Ceremony during one Matriculation Festival.  She cherished them greatly, so it is with great honor that I adorn myself with these.  But, we gather our gems just about everywhere. We have many Explorer Guards patrolling the seas, whenever they stumble upon a shipwreck, they thoroughly investigate and collect any pretties that might be used back in the city.  Often times, our captured foe are in possession of such beauties too, which also are used within our city.  Besides, adorning our bodies with gems, shells, trinkets and all varieties of pretties, we do the same with our weapons, pets, work beasts, servants, buildings, just about everything!

How long were you in school, Majesty? The number of seasons I keep hearing just seems, well, like a very long time.

Well, I just recently ended my formal education.  First I think I should advise, that our people are gifted with a rather long life span.  A Gemstone Merfolk, should live at least 150-200 seasons, but many often live until 300 seasons!  Our people are well known as well, for the importance they place on education.  Formally, we begin at the age of three seasons, and continue for approximately forty seasons.  This seems like an unnecessary long duration to some, however, there is so much to be learned, our studies include such courses as astrology, meteorology, gemology, oceanography, geology, apothecary, Ga, Merfolk history, Mernac history, Kala and Siberlee, just to name a few.

Your general, Bull – err – the head guard was saying something about recapturing 13 Dark beings. And someone else even mentioned a Waterdragon! I thought those were creatures for legends meant to scare naughty children. Can you tell me anything more about these Dark beings and how you re-captured them? Why you? No offense, your Majesty, but where I come from people hardly let the royalty take on the Fathers’ fiercest creatures.

I regret to confess, that yes, this is true.  Unfortunately, these beasts do exist.  The Royal Kalatans have always strived keep Man save from such dastardly beings.  All the released Dark beings were originally captured many seasons ago, some long before my mother’s reign.  And yes, there was a Waterdragon included in the escapees.  We haven’t yet re-captured all the escapees, but please know, we won’t rest until we do.  Thank you for your concern about my safety, but, it was my mother and grandmothers before her, who originally captured these beasts, and I have been highly trained to follow in their footsteps, it is my duty and calling to lead my people in the protection of Siberlee’s cherished Man.

So I understand you’ve recently discovered a half sister. Do you have a statement about that?

Oh yes!  Jira!  What a wonderful discovery!  Imagine my surprise to find her.  As you know, I just recently lost my dear mother, and had no more living relatives.  When I needed her the most, Kala sent my sister to me.  It was my first quest to re-capture the beasts that I discovered Jira, and now I can rejoice in the comfort of knowing, I’ll always have her in my heart and that I can call to her, and she to me, whenever we need the other.

What is your next step, if I may ask?

Well, right now, I am on my way back to the city.  We have a couple of re-captured beasts to take back to Rainbow Reef, and I must again visit the Star Crystal for more information.  Then, again, my I will continue my quest for the remaining escapees.

Thank you for answering my questions. It’s always the highest honor to hear the thoughts of those who truly matter to Mernac.

Oh no, it has been my pleasure!  It has been a true honor to meet with you.  I can see in your aura that you are truly one of Mernac’s most valued Goodwill Ambassadors.  Please, take this amethyst amulet as a token of my appreciation.  May it always find you in good health and with a dancing spirit.

BREAKING NEWS

by LindaC

Three Orcs were attacked by a pack of rabid Krickers when they were out hunting and trapping in the Halon Forest of Kezia this week. The threesome apparently stumbled upon the sleeping Krickers hidden under a recent light dusting of snow, completely hidden from view. The Krickers must have been protecting their newly born brood under their warm fur, for it is reported that they sprang forth suddenly, shredding the Orcs to pieces. Only one of them escaped the razor-like teeth of the Krickers and survived to tell the account. Muklar Blooddripper is resting comfortably at a nearby Menk House recovering from his harrowing ordeal.

In other news, an 8-season-old
Elvin boy was rescued from the talons of a Griffin by a Pegasus yesterday in Brangin. He’d been out collecting Griffin feathers with his uncle when the female unexpectedly returned to her nest and found the pair in amongst her newly laid eggs. The perturbed mother Griffin immediately set upon the child and meant to throw him off the cliff when, his uncle says, a magnificent white Pegasus swooped in from nowhere and saved the boy. “She just came out of the clouds, whinnying and kicking her hooves at the Griffin until it dropped him to the ground.” Griffin feathers are much prized flights for archers, but they are also a much sought after secret ingredient in many magical spells and potions. Many fortune seekers have lost their lives trying to get these feathers, so this boy and his uncle are indeed lucky to be alive, thanks to the Pegasus.

Meanwhile closer to home, representatives of the
Summoner’s Guild have reported an encounter with a strange entity from a distant planet in another solar system they believe to be planet “Dirt”. This being is Elvin in nature but quite portly, unlike our Elves here on Mernac. He has a long white beard and is oddly fond of wearing bright red clothing. They say the jolly entity has just completed a wondrous time on his planet they call “Christmas” where he delivers gifts to all the good children of his world with the aid of flying reindeer. Guild members are still debating the credibility of the being they call “Santa Claus”. Says one senior member, “it was all quite believable until the flying reindeer comment. I mean, can you imagine flying reindeer? C’mon!” Arch Summoner, Sorendil Skypeerer, has been assigned the Santa case and will report more findings to the Guild and to interested Mernacians, as there may be some value in this Christmas story for Mernac.

And on a lighter note, our own Dark Fae witch
Moroova has uncharacteristically offered the use of Traddlebow Castle’s Grand Hall as the staging area for Gilmore’s holiday food drive. Moroova will generously oversee the collection and distribution of food, clothing and essential items to the land’s less fortunate members of society. Moroova normally has such folks rounded up and locked in the dungeon at this time of season to prevent them from ruining the picture perfect atmosphere of the festivities, but has had a tremendous change of heart this season. All she is saying is that 3 spirits helped her to see more clearly.

Seasons Greetings to all Mernacians far and wide!

RW Celebrity Symposium

by LindaC

I recently had the wonderful opportunity of interviewing ebook author Sahara Kelly for Mernac, whose latest work, Game Over, is due out in March 2007 from e-publisher Ellora’s Cave. Ms. Kelly shares her views on writing and fantasy with us.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Bit on the mundane side, I'm afraid! LOL. I was born and raised in England and I'm told I still have a bit of the accent left. I'm an ordinary sort of person - (wife, and mom to a college junior) with a rather over-active imagination and a passion for storytelling. I've been writing for over twenty years, but it's really only been in the last five or six years that I've had adequate time to devote to my novels (and learn the delights of digital art). I stumbled into the whole thing by coincidence and now have over forty titles available through Ellora's Cave. A serendipitous combination of chance and timing, I suppose, that still stuns me now and again. I'm a character-driven writer, so I'm told, not a world-builder. I envy world-builders - that's a skill that requires intense focus and a LOT of notes. I'm bad at making notes. LOL

Do you have a favourite Fantasy Author?

Oh yes. I'm married to a self-confessed 'hard sci-fi' fan (who also has the complete
Robert Jordan Wheels of Time series) and we both enjoy a good solid fantasy, so I have quite a library of books in the non-romance category, running from Asimov or Heinlein and including Poul Anderson, Philip K Dick, Terry Brooks, Neil Gaiman, Anne McCaffrey and Ursula K. LeGuin, most of which I've read and enjoyed. But I come back, time and time again, to Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. Their wicked blend of satire, humor and fantasy never fails to entrance me! I'm organizing my Discworld novels this winter and re-reading them in chronological order. Spending an hour or two in Ankh-Morpork is just SOOOO much fun!!!

What draws you to write in the fantasy genre?

The freedom! In my fantasy worlds, there are no limits, no social conventions that must be adhered to. My two "fairy" themed fantasies -
Persephone's Wings and Wingin' It - let me flitter around and ignore things like gravity and common sense while cribbing shamelessly from Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream"! My video-game-based fantasies were equally liberating. And my fable, Georgie and her Dragon...well, it was more of an hommage to my favorite authors than anything else. LOL I could be as outrageous as I wanted without any restrictions. I absolutely adore a good laugh along with a great story.

What inspires you?

Lots of things. My family - now and again. The world around me, songs, odd little things I hear on the news - I have a writing partner and close friend who is a constant source of inspiration and encouragement - he gives me an intermittent kick up the rear when I need one. We write together and also individually. But mostly it's the characters themselves. Someone will start to appear in the back of my head and just "buzz" there, refusing to go away until I've written his/her story. That's the character-driven thing showing up, I guess.

How do you stay creative and defeat writer's block?

After so many books, I constantly worry that I won't be as creative or as fresh, but it's a worry I get between books, not during them. Once that story idea takes shape then I'm good to go. Writer's block for me is more something that turns into "Chapter block"...what I'd originally planned to do isn't going to work now that the characters have taken shape and become their own people with their own distinct personalities. So I have to do some re-thinking. That's where talking to my writing partner really helps, and occasionally a chunk of dark chocolate. Between the two, I manage to overcome the problem, whatever it is! LOL

Tell us about your latest book.

My newest fantasy is titled "Game Over" (releasing in March of 2007, Ellora's Cave). There is one game that I adored playing with my son when he was young, and we spent many happy months cramping our thumbs, doing our very best to rescue a certain kidnapped princess from the clutches of an evil villain. We visited fairies for bottles of red potion, switched between the light and dark worlds, trying to avoid killing chickens, and generally had endless fun! Those memories still make me smile, so at some point I knew I was going to have to write a tale in honor of that game. Hence this rather tongue-in-cheek look at Princess Zara and her hero, Sir Lincoln of Green as their game unfolds and takes them through some rather...interesting...adventures. It's sort of a companion to a piece I wrote a while ago called "Beating Level Nine" - a short story about a vampire who has everything he wants...except the ability to defeat the final villain in the online game he's addicted to. NOT your usual vampire story - but it's always been one of my favorites. Did I mention I sort of like a heavy dash of humor with many of my books? I have some serious and intense full-length novels too, but...well...I like to make people smile!

Do you have any advice for our aspiring writers?

Gosh...that's hard. So many folks more qualified have wonderful articles that can inspire and instruct. But...I guess I'd say keep it simple. If you want to be a writer - then WRITE.

Too many people I talk to seem to worry about the "mechanics" of writing - the grammar, the spelling, even the format!! That's all details, stuff an editor can take care of. If you have a story burning in your brain, WRITE IT!! Doesn't matter if it's perfectly formatted in Microsoft Word, scrawled on a yellow lined legal pad or etched into buffalo hide with a sharp thorn!!! Don't tell yourself you don't have the time or the technique. That's not what writing is about. If you can write an email, you can write a novel, practically speaking. If the STORY is there, everything else is incidental and can be tidied up.

Write what you like to read, and read as much as you can, since the more you read the better writer you will be. They go hand-in-hand. Most writers either are or were voracious readers at some point in their lives - it's often the genesis of their passion for the written word.

Sometimes it also helps to set yourself a little schedule - an hour or so every day when you know you can focus on your writing and nothing else. Find what works for you and just do it. Thinking about it doesn't count since we're always thinking about stories. Doing it is what counts, putting those words on paper (or disk), shaping those characters, creating those adventures. Bypassing all the minor stuff and getting to the point which is telling your story.

There. That kept it simple, right? LOL!  There are few rules, if any, when it comes to the creative arts. Doing what you love doing is bliss - I've learned that over the last few years. I don't "work" any more. I write, which is my joy and my passion in life. I spend long hours every day immersed in my private worlds, physically draining myself but delighting my soul. Yes, I love my "job". I'm blessed to be a writer. I hope others will experience that same blessing - just don't give up on it for reasons that don't matter, stay with it for reasons that DO!

Thank you for sharing your time and your thoughts with us Mernacians Ms. Kelly. We look forward to more of your great books

SPORTS REPORT

by LindaC

The Linge Archery Tournament wrapped up in Traddlebow this week. It was widely rumored that star wood elf archer Arumbus Talimar would make an appearance, but we are told that he was tied up with other business nearby. Nevertheless, this year’s competitors gave us a great show. Nicoleas Menelar of Solaris came out on top over his close rival Kendus Bollimer of Lingin, winning the Golden Bow and taking home the 20 000 mernal prize. There was some controversy when it was discovered that three Kezian competitors were using illegal compound bows and restricted flights. But they were promptly disqualified and banned from the competition for the next 3 seasons.

In cart racing news, Nikael Chudakker is ahead of the pack again in A1 action. Our racers took on the infamou
s Goldmont track this time and faced much hardship on the road to victory. Racers and spectators had to endure a dozen re-starts due to a number of grisly crashes at the start of the race. The deadly track even claimed its thirteenth victim in the last seven seasons when Tulo Hannekin lost it in the second chicane on the track’s steepest incline. “He was a fierce and brave competitor,” remembers teammate Nellio Bondetti who came in third in this month’s race. “He’ll be fondly remembered and sadly missed.” Hannekin was also a great philanthropist off the course, so Brimstone sponsors are donating 5000 mernals in Hannekin’s memory to the Mernac Widows and Orphans fund, a foundation near and dear to Hannekin’s heart for he lost his own father to the ravages of war in Zonga and turned to cart racing to help support his mother and siblings. Next month, A1 series racing pulls into Zonga in its Cathall circuit. While the Zonga track isn’t near as dangerous as Goldmont, racers will have the weather to contend with as the rainy season sets in.

Krogan Thunderpits returned to the Raiders’ lineup in spectacular fashion this week after serving his 3-game suspension for dirty hits against the Pillagers recently. Thunderpits racked up 7 points and 5 clean hits in last night’s Latoss game against the Knuckledraggers. Even star toss-
gnome Cooli Dragbottom said Thunderpits was on top of his game last night. “His back was against the wall and he really pulled out all the stops to redeem himself with the coach, the players and especially the fans,” he said. Thunderpits and the Raiders move on to Bonkus to take on the Boneheads again before their 5-game stretch at home.

Join us next time for Skullball action when Tumok Snarlbuster is expected to return to the Bruisers lineup after his knee and shoulder injuries, and we’ll also be covering events from the Magic on Ice competitions in
Gilmore next month.

Enchanted Advancements Abound

Attention all Mernac Devotees! The trolls have officially unveiled the brand new shiny enchanted eBook apparatus. The oo’s and ah’s were heard throughout the land when Mernac’s very own Grumby demonstrated this marvelous new magical device. The excited shrills of glee echoed through the crowd, as Grumby nimbly inserted several scrolls into the apparatus, and “poof”, it was magically transformed into an electronic PDF eBook!

Recent buzz amongst distinguished Seers is that The One is delighted with this new progression, and in celebration Mernac officials have declared that all enchanted eBooks will be FREE! When asked to comment,
Sara Dragonmist replied, “I believe this day will be marked in Mernac history as the turning point in advancement for all beings. I have already begun to create complete tomes of my adventures and will soon be distributing them throughout the land.”

During assessment trials any registered user can create their OWN eBooks from all the stories on Mernac. You get to pick your favorites, turn them into an eBook, save them on your hard drive, email them to your friends, whatever you’d like! And you also have access to all the other eBooks your fellow Mernacians have created too, as we are also stockpiling them in an old unused apothecary closet.

The lines are long for the enchanted eBook apparatus, but it does move quickly! So be sure to visit and try it out! Instruction scrolls are provided below, and we’ve been advised that updates for new bells and whistles are already in the works! These new phases will include sending a PM to the creator of each enchanted eBook, advising them that it has been approved by officials, updated character sets, and much, much more. As succubi are famous for saying, “It’s free, try it and see!”

Those Eyes by Serapella

A Word From Our Founder

by Rick

As the year rolls to a close, I must take some time to address my friends, so I sit down today with my quill and parchments and look back on a most wonderful debut year for Mernac, amateur writers, artists, and programmers, and all Mernacians around the world.  It is indeed a joyous time for all as we reflect back on our successes, trials, and advancements, as well as, look forward into our exciting New Year, just opening up before us.

I would also like to take a moment to express my warmest regards to each and every Mernacian and their families.  Over the past year, I have been privileged to meet and work with some of the most talented, creative, and exciting people that I have ever met.  It is no secret that Mernac is what YOU make it, and we have found Mernac to be a truly exhilarating, challenging, and rewarding world.  I hope you have enjoyed your journey with Mernac so far, and are as excited as we are about the new adventures awaiting Mernac for the coming year.  Please join me as I reminisce on our achievements from 2006 and peek into a Seer’s crystal ball for 2007.

The Legends of Mernac is an Open Source Creativity (OSC) project dedicated to promoting creativity and talent through the submission and publication of short stories, art, music, animation, programming and other creative contributions.  The thread that ties all this together is the world of Mernac, a mythical high fantasy world designed to be created, molded, and formed by its users into a never-ending interactive story spanning a 10,000 year history.

Mernac officially opened September 1st 2006 after a few months of beta testing.  Over the last few months the site has grown considerably in content, functionality and registered users.  We currently have over 800 registered users, and from these users over 500 stories and saplings have been submitted along with over 400 contributed pieces of art.  The Mernac forums remain constantly active with almost 11,000 posts and over the last 4 months we have successfully held half a dozen contests.  Work from several Mernac contributors has been printed in ImagineFX magazine and over 100 Mernac images have appeared on Renderosity and other art related sites.  We have had several media interviews and been approached by a Podcast producer that is interested in making Mernac Podcasts sometime in 2007.  Yes, we have grown nicely since we opened.

The site’s quickest growth was in the first month of operation when we were quickly forced to move the site to a dedicated server because of the high traffic and server load.  The server move did not go as smoothly as possible (do they ever?) and disrupted a few things (for example, there are still a spattering of stray question marks in the text of some older stories), but eventually all problems were worked out and we are currently operating well on our own server.

Besides all the marvelous contributions from all our users, since we have opened we have also received daily contributions from various “Gods” and “Disciples” who provide outstanding content, editing, and administrative support to the site.  I would especially like to thank all these people for the support and help they have provided.  We could not do it without you.

With the help of all these people:  The base of Mernac is firmly established.

As exciting as Mernac was during its first four months of operation, 2007 promises to be far more exciting.  In 2007 we plan on the following:

  1. Improved quality of submissions:  For Mernac to grow into a vibrant community and bustling world, we need high quality submissions to bring audiences to Mernac again and again.  The stories and art published on Mernac will evolve into those of the best quality possible to bring this audience to us on a continual basis.  To help with this process, we will host in our forums critique sessions in the form of workshops where other users can offer suggestions and constructive criticism.  The creator will (or sometimes not) use this to improve their work and grow as artists or writers.  The end result will be higher quality published contributions.
  2. Mernac University:  In 2007 we will sponsor a number of activities aimed at the creative growth of our contributing members, including classes, workshops, activities, and tutorials for artist and writers alike.  LindaC and the other “Gods” will organize many of these activities.  Please PM her with any suggestions or requests you may have.
  3. Larger Audience:  At this point the vast majority of Mernac users are creators (artists, writers, programmers).  In 2007 we will make a concerted effort to bring a much larger audience to view and enjoy all our work.  Much of this will be accomplished by having higher quality submissions.  We will also endeavor to have a number of long fantasy sagas (for example, what we are doing with The Battle For Traddlebow) to give readers a good (great, we hope) long fantasy saga they can sink their teeth into and become “hooked” on the Mernac stories and content.  Much of our advertising and PR in 2007 will be aimed at finding a larger audience for the work submitted to Mernac.  If you have some ideas to help promote Mernac so we can grow, please contact Shadow Dragon who will be heading up many of our promotional activities.  In addition, we will begin an active eBook program, hopefully gaining us an even larger audience (and with luck maybe some revenue!).  Please contact The Other with ideas for eBook promotions or content.
  4. Open Source Programming:  There are many plans for Mernac including music, soundtracks, animations (movies), and gaming - all based on the stories of Mernac.  All these things require programming.  As this is an OSC project, we will make Mernac an Open Project on SourceForge sometime later this year to accomplish all the different features that our users are asking for.  We are ACTIVELY looking for someone to head up this effort.  This person could very likely become our VP of Geekiness (programming ;-)).  If you know anyone that may qualify, please let Tellen know, as he will be helping us with this transition.
  5. Content Contests:  LindaC, our Director of Content (VP of Creativity), will be organizing monthly cash prizes aimed at soliciting additional users and content to be added to the site.  This will likely be larger prizes and contests than most of those seen in 2006.  We intend on finding co-sponsors from various writing and art related companies to provide even more enticing prizes.
  6. Income Opportunities:  Mernac was always intended to be a venture where contributors could make some income from their work.  In 2007 we intend on beginning to make this happen.  You can expect to see more art related content to be used on merchandise and sold on places like Café Press, eBay and other venues.  Artists already receive a cut of these profits.  Sometime later in 2007, writers whose stories the art is submitted to (and eventually editors) will receive a portion of these proceeds.  We will also begin to sell advertising (banners, etc.).  A portion of advertising revenues will be given to the writers/editors of stories where the advertising is placed.  Much of the success of these programs will be largely dependent on the size of audience we can all bring to Mernac.  Hopefully in the second half of the year we plan on starting a subscription to the site for enhanced features (the base content will likely always remain free).  A portion of subscriptions will be given to those writers and artists and other contributors whose work attracts the most audience (views and comments).  In addition we will further develop the gold economy system (donations and gifts for contributors) so that it will have a real world redeemable value.
  7. New Plotlines:  Currently the only true perpetual storyline on Mernac is “The Sap Wars” (with 31 completed Legends!).  This is being actively added to by all the stories in process in The Battle for Traddlebow event.  In 2007 we hope to add numerous new plotlines.  Each will need a Sage (editor) to control and guide its growth (as I am doing in the Sap Wars).  We will be asking for potential Sages to come up with other base story lines and then have other write-in events (like we did initially for Traddlebow) to start and eventually perpetuate the new plotlines.  Potential Sages will need 3-5 of their own legends in the same period all interrelated to qualify.  I hope that some of the following themes may be started:
    1. Cyberpunk - (Dwarves discover gunpowder!) in the beginning of the 4th Millennium.
    2. Exploration - Explorers go out and discover the many marvels of Mernac and its different continents, countries and cultures – hopefully some nice seagoing scenes.  Beginning of the 3rd Millennium.
    3. Exodus – the legends of the break up of the Gods into The Mothers and The Fathers.  This will likely be the basis of much of the lore that will be the backbone of Mernac for the next 10,000 seasons.  .
    4. A Dark time – The 660’s right after the Fathers are kicked out of the heavens.  Here the Fathers rule most of Mernac and wreak havoc.
    5. The Faerie Wars – The legends of how male fairies were banished after an attempted revolt.  This is the time of Airianna.
    6. Others that our users may come up with.

So, all in all, we have a very exciting year ahead of us.  One of the most important things to remember is that Mernac is a project that is ever evolving according to the suggestions and contributions of its users.  If you have a good idea, please tell us about it in the forums.  Better yet, volunteer to be a Disciple and help build your idea, be that content, promotions or programming.

The Other and I hope you all like the direction of Mernac.

May the Seven Mothers bless you,

Rick

FREE Copper for Commoners

In a recent press release, the Scriveners Guild announced plans to incorporate many aspects of interactivity within our very own Mernac Muse.  Authorization has been granted by the Mothers and the Fathers to PAY OUT COPPER to all Mernacians who participate.  Effective immediately, all Mernacians have the opportunity to cash-in with their Muse!  We have been instructed to simply read each Muse edition, making certain to follow all the links hidden within.  Any and all Mernacians, who come across a link that contains a Story or Art of their own, need only PM that Link to The Other to get paid 10 Copper!  Please note, our in-house Scribes did find small print indicating that this offer is only payable ONE time per Issue per Mernacian.  So, we suggest only PM-ing ONE link per Issue to The Other, either Art or Story.  This is fantastic news since the Muse is commonly published with dozens and dozens of links.  So, it’s doubtful that you not be able to find at least one link to a submission of yours, but if you don’t, just make sure you make a submission soon to try to be included in the next edition.  And Muse publishers have also reminded us that all Commoners are cordially invited to submit to any Open Sapling linked within each Muse.  What a fantastic befalling, fit for a King!

We have also received notification from the Muse publishers that they are now offering 25 Copper for article submissions that are published.  This means if you send a personal advice question to Kalos, a recipe, article or anything to the Muse, AND it’s published, YOU will be paid 25 Copper.  Kalos questions can be emailed to kalos@mernac.com and all other submissions can be emailed to muse@mernac.com.  Undercover informants have also counseled via means of a dead drop, that Muse publishers are actively looking for freelance reporters.  We have confirmed, they do indeed, need a temporary Seer for the Astrology column and are still working to validate the positions for crossword creator, word search, and local breaking news.  If you’ve ever dreamed of getting out of the fields or out of the bands of pillagers, and behind a desk with a scroll and quill, now you can.  We’re told these positions typically start out paying 50 Copper each!  Make sure you email the publishers of the Muse at muse@mernac.com if you’d like to be considered for any of these positions.

Finally, the Commoners of Mernac have an opportunity to really be part of the only official Mernac News Team and make a real difference in Mernac, all while being PAID to do so!  This correspondent is extremely excited and can’t wait to spread the word!  Now that the Mernac Mint is producing high quality Government Recognized Copper, everyone has a chance to make it rich- Mernac style!  Currently, Mernacians can earn Copper by so many means, such as, submitting OSC Links, Downloads, forum posts, submitting art and stories, just to name a few.  And, it seems Mernac Officials are really on their toes finding ways to appease the masses so there’s a money making means for just about everyone, human, elf, griffin, or lamia.   Thank goodness it’s an election year!

ASTROLOGY

Our highly esteemed Seer, pyroglyph has been called to duty and will be unavailable to provide our monthly Muse Astrology predictions for a period of time.  We are seeking a temporary replacement.  Position pays 50 Copper per month.  QUALIFIED Seers ONLY need apply.  Please send resume and near future sample astrology predictions to muse@mernac.com.
